Does Invisalign® work for everyone?

Invisalign® therapy is the newest, easiest and most discrete way to straighten your teeth! If you’ve been putting off braces because of their appearance and discomfort, you need to hear this. Now, you can improve your oral health and straighten your teeth without needing anyone else to know.

Invisalign® is a game-changing orthodontic appliance that uses custom clear aligners to correct tooth alignment. The clear aligners are worn over the top and bottom arches of the mouth and changed every 2 weeks or at the dentist’s discretion. Each new aligner in the succession is made to exert gentle but consistent pressure on the teeth in order to coax them into alignment.

Not only is Invisalign® invisible at a distance due to its snug fit around the teeth combined with its transparent profile, but with Invisalign® you will never need to see the orthodontist for an adjustment! Cases of severely misaligned teeth still require traditional braces, due to their increased ability to correct complex malocclusion (poor alignment). There are still some things that are not corrected by Invisalign®, but patients with mild to moderate crowding or misalignment are typically good candidates for Invisalign®.

Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?

Finding out and getting started are as easy as 1-2-3!
1) Talk to your dentist about the areas of concern in your mouth and have a digital scan of your mouth completed. The scan can be completed in a matter of just a few minutes.
2) Review a simulation of the potential for your alignment with your dentist. This will help you to understand what is achievable with Invisalign®. Discuss cost and insurance coverage.
3) Give your dentist the O.K. to send your digital images off to a certified Invisalign® lab so that your custom aligners can be made!

Who is not a candidate for Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is not recommended for children or teenagers until they have lost all of their primary teeth and can maintain the strict regimen required for success with Invisalign®.

Care and Maintenance Guidelines for Invisalign Therapy

Your dentist will provide you with an overview of the care and wear instructions for your customer aligners. You will receive between twenty and thirty full sets of aligners and you will wear each in succession – making sure not to dispose of the last pair you wore in case something was to happen to your new pair. In this case you would revert to the previous set or next set depending upon how many days into your new aligner you are.

Taking care of your aligners and developing routines will ensure your success in your course of treatment. Aligners must be worn a minimum of 22 hours per day and should only be removed to eat or to clean the teeth. Since aligners sit so snugly to the teeth, it is important that they be clean at all times to avoid trapping acids and debris since natural salival rinsing will be less effective.

It is recommended to brush and floss the teeth after each meal, and not to drink carbonated water or sodas with the aligners in place. Still water can be consumed freely with aligners in the mouth.

Many patients report an increase in their overall oral health when they have completed a course of Invisalign® therapy due to the fact that snacking is made inconvenient with all that brushing! And empty calories, like sugary sodas, become a meal-time only activity. Since a course of treatment can vary between 12 and 18 months, the healthy habits that are encouraged while wearing Invisalign become established and reflexive.

What happens after a course of Invisalign®?

Once your dentist determines that your teeth are properly in alignment, you will be provided with a retainer to use at night. Your dentist will provide you with wear instructions which will detail how often to wear your retainer. If you have had any small resin dots installed on your teeth to help secure your aligners, your dentist will grind off the dots and smooth the surface of the teeth.

Your new smile and your new healthy eating and drinking habits can be here to stay if you continue to take care of your teeth and get the right nutrition! Hiding your smile will be a thing of the past as you end your course of Invisalign® therapy with a newfound confidence. If you have questions about this or other services offered by our general dentist, contact our office today!
